Making the Toile - Paper Modelling

Using my pattern pieces made from my paper modelling work, I'll now construct my toile. Laying my pattern pieces flat on to calico I pin securely and start cutting around each piece.

Once notches are in place I start to sew the darts and the pieces together corresponding to the letter and the notches.

Creative Designers - Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin

Fashion, industrial and architect designer

“Cardin was known for his avant-garde style and his Space Age designs. He prefers geometric shapes and motifs, often ignoring the female form. He advanced into unisex fashions, sometimes experimental, and not always practical”.

Pierre Cardin travelled the world, and saw fashion architecturally, culturally, and artistically. Cardin design style is often described as "avant-garde" and "Art Deco," his aesthetic is one of clean lines, bright colours and strong, geometric shapes. He often worked with unusual material such as vinyl fabrics and notions like carpenter nails and sometimes ignored the body when designing for it, which was an unusual trait for a fashion designer of that time.

Cardin extended beyond fashion and design he establish himself creating a personal brand for himself. Cardin's name can be found on crockery, haute couture, accessories, furniture and a full line of fragrance.

Design Development Ideas and Samples

Using my paper modelling design, I drew quick sketches of it in it's full form. Keeping to the structure of my paper modelling shapes I started sketching rough development idea by enhancing the shape, adding flare and pleating. I then collected suitable fabrics for each design, using a mixture of shear and polyester fabrics.
